As evidenced by Octane LAN, churches actually make great venues for LAN parties. They usually have lots of space, come equipped with their own supply of folding tables and chairs, have ample power, and sometimes even have an available PA / sound system to use. Not only that, depending on the organizers affilation with the church, the venue can be had for little to no fee.
The downside is, not all churches like the idea of violent video games. Nor do they tend to appreciate, the types of strong language, and other less than savory habits and behaviors that cannot easily be regulated but generally tend to come with allowing groups of non-belivers into your sanctuary. One might ask "what would Jesus do?" and come to the conclusion that bringing non-belivers into the sanctuary is one of the main points of the whole thing; but then again, believers in any religoin rarely fullly agree with eachother, let alone fully agree on the proper interpretations of thier own holy books.
Despite all this, Octane was not the only LAN that took place at a church. The Christian Gamers League (aka CGL) was based out of the Park Victoria Baptist chruch in San Jose and hosted semi-regular LAN events. Their events were not as full blown as the Octane events, and were much more subdued by comparison. By that I mean, that they were relatively quiet and did not feature loud techno music, party atmosphere, or a BBQ.
Attendees from our regular group were myself, Kraz, Dubman and Mameman.
I meant to attend more of these events, but was only able to attend this one and one other which I do not appear to have any records or pictures of. The main games I remember playing were Battlefield 1942/ Desert Combat, and Call of Duty... as well as a strange Call of Duty realism mod that made everything extra difficult (as realism games tend to do). .
