This Octane, was one of the best in recent memory. Not only did it feature some killer tunes spun out by our DJ friends from NGF, but we also had some MAD sponsorship hookups in the form on Intel and Nvidia. We had a ton of t-shirts and stickers and like like to giveaway, plus an ultra cool Pentium 4 processor and gigabit lan card donated by Intel.
There were a number of cool tournaments and contests, the biggest of which was the destert combat tournament which was dominated by Phil's crack team of DC fanatics. Perhaps the oddest contest was the Man, ape, gun, game which was basically like rock paper scissors, but it involved using your whole body, and not just your hands... which of course makes it that much more fun! We also had a Generals tournament, which of course was dominated by the mighty Zer.
As always, this Octane was incredibly fun, and you should be ashamed of yourself if you missed it.

Since I had already done some work contacting sponsors on behalf of SV Frag, I decided to offer my sponsor contacting services up to Octane LAN as well. I was able to get a few goodies from companies like Intel, AMD and Nvidia. By the time 2003 rolled around we were giving away a variety of sponsor T shirts, posters and even big ticket items like intel processors.
An Nvidia marketing rep by the name of Phil Sholz even came out to Octane 10 on May 2nd, 2003. At the time, Phil was just getting started in building Nvidia’s consumer marketing program. In the years to come he would become a fixture at LAN events all across the country.
At this particular event Phil came by to hang out, deliver swag, and also personally deliver to me a brand new GeForce FX card I had won at a raffle that took place at a recent Nvidia focus group that Zer, DocBron and myself attended.
While at the party Phil even played some games with us on Quemine’s spare rig. Phil was one of the nicest guys around and was always smiling and easy to approach. Soon, everyone in the LAN community would know who he was, and within the community he would eventually gain the nickname “Uncle Phil”.
